What's Happening?

Threadgill Concerts

The Threadgill Concert Series provides the major source of revenue for the Greenville Suzuki Strings Association. The concert organizers allow GSSA exclusive rights to sell drink concessions for the concert. We are allowed to keep all the proceeds from the drink sales. The money raised is used to purchase instruments for the Suzuki strings programs at Bowie and Travis. So far, GSSA has given more than $10,000 in grants to GISD for the purchase of instruments. For more information about the Greenville Suzuki Strings Association and the GISD Suzuki Strings program, go to www.greenvillesuzuki.org.

The Threadgill Concert provides a great opportunity for our Suzuki strings students to perform for the community. As a way of public exposure, some students will have a 5-10 min. performance at 7:20 during the pre-concert immediately before the main concert. We will need parents (from any grade or level) to help at 5:00 PM to be ready to sell the drinks.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:

In order to have a successful fundraiser, we need volunteers for the drink sales. The drinks sold will be bottled water only. We will use two tables in the main lobby of the auditorium for our drink sales. At least two volunteers will be needed at each table (a total of 4)from the set up at 5:30 until 30 to 40 minutes after intermission. During the 15-minute intermission, we will need at least 3, preferably 4, people at each table. Intermission should occur sometime between 8:30 and 9:00. We will also need volunteers to ice down the drinks Saturday afternoon and bring them to the auditorium. If any parents would like to stay for the concert after the children’s performance, they will need to buy tickets as the concert is a fund raiser for the Friends of Main Street. Please do not try to watch the concert without purchasing a ticketeven if you are working at the concessions tables. Our agreement with the Threadgill organization is that each one of us who wants to watch the concert in part or in full will purchase a ticket. Of course, we are welcome to watch the Suzuki students perform without purchasing a ticket. Any time after the beginning of the main concert at 7:30 PM, a ticket is required for admittance. Your help greatly benefits our students and will be very much appreciated.

Parents with children playing in the performance will need to arrive at the Municipal Auditorium before 6:45. If volunteering for drink sales, parents may need to arrive earlier. It is very important that you prepare to arrive early, since you will have to look for a parking space. Parents will take their children downstairs to the City Counsel room at 6:45 to meet Mr. Murillo. All children performing need to be in the City Counsel Room at 6:45. Once there, children need to get their instruments tuned by Mr. Murillo and have a quick warm-up before going to perform. Instrument cases will stay in the counsel room. After the children’s performance, the children and Mr. Murillo will come back to the City Council Room to get the instrument cases. The students will be escorted backstage by Mr. Murillo. Parents will be able to watch their performance from inside the auditorium.

Concessions at Concert

Look for GSSA members selling drinks at the concessions table at the concert. As with all donations to GSSA, the proceeds from our drink sales will be used to purchase additional violins for our Suzuki violin students. A donation box will also be available for anyone wishing to make an additional donation.

Local violin students to perform

You will not want to miss our own Suzuki violin students from Bowie and Travis performing right before the main event at the Threadgill Concert. Mr. Rigo Murillo and some of his students will play on stage at the Municipal Auditorium shortly before the 7:30 PM start of the main concert. Be there to see our own local violinists perform! They will appreciate your support!

You can help!

Would you like to help the youngsters in our community learn to play the violin (fiddle) and in the process learn something about playing the violin yourself? You can help in many valuable ways, such as:

· Making copies of forms, hand-outs, fliers, reminders, letters, etc.

· Typing/publishing materials designed to help the program

· Help and contribute ideas for fundraising activities

· Entering web site information like newsletters, news, schedule, etc.

· Bulletin boards/posters

· Community outreach and relations/ parent communication activities

· Help schedule play-ins, recitals, and public performances

· Other communication tasks

· Anything else that you think will help our children make more beautiful music!

You can be a volunteer at Bowie or Travis on the day and time of your choice. Fifteen, 20, 30 minutes a week of your time will be a great way to assist this new program for the children of our community.

If you are interested in helping out in these and other ways, please do not hesitate to contact us. Your work will be greatly appreciated!
